Theme for You and Me

Theme for You and Me

by: Stacey Lukasiewicz

The instructor said,

    Go home and write
    a page tonight.
And let that page come out of you--
    Then, it will be true.

I wonder if I’m supposed to know?
I am seventeen, white, born in the suburbs.
I have lived in the same place my whole life,
in this house I have always called home.
I am the third child out of eight in my family.
The process of life has always ran in and
around this old house, acting as my schoolhouse,
my playhouse, and most of all my safe-house,
the place where I find security and comfort,
the place where I am not afraid to be me.

It's not easy to decide what to do from here
at this place in my life.  But I know that if
I trust who God’s made me to be I will hear him
hear him, hear me--he will listen, I try to listen too but all
I seem to hear are the cant's, the if’s, and other peoples’ disapprovals.
Well, I guess that’s expected, right? Life's not always easy.
I like sports, math, and enjoy life.
I like my family, my friends, and school.
I have so many things I know I like, so how am I suppose to choose?
I guess I need to believe that my past has prepared me, that
the what if’s and I don’t knows won’t overshadow my good judgement.
So now I need to go without fear or shame and trust God is right there with me.

Being me will not be an easy task,
But it will be
a part of deciding my future.
You are older,
yet you still feel these same things too.
That's amazing!
Sometimes society attempts to manipulate me.
Nor is it ever completely honest with me.
But I will always fight to be me.
As I learn from you.
I guess you learn from me--
although you’re older--and more experienced--
and have had more to see.

This is my page for you and me.
